SACRAMENTO, CA – The Alliance for Renewable Clean Hydrogen Energy Systems (ARCHES) leadership issued the following statements today in response to the Department of Energy (DOE)’s decision to eliminate $1.2 billion in federal funding for the ARCHES program, calling it a shortsighted move that abandons America’s opportunity to lead the global clean energy transition.
“Today’s decision to withdraw federal funding for ARCHES ignores the critical benefits our projects will deliver – including 220,000 American jobs and stronger national energy security and resilience. The ARCHES Ecosystem and Marketplace will continue to advance in collaboration with state leaders and private sector innovators – building on our strong foundation to create a reliable, future-focused domestic hydrogen network for California and beyond.”
– Angelina Galiteva, CEO, ARCHES
“California has long led the nation in clean energy innovation—from solar power to electric vehicles—and hydrogen will be no exception. Despite the loss of federal funding, we will press forward with our state, private, and international partners to build the infrastructure, train the workforce, and establish the supply chains that will power a modern, resilient energy economy. Together, we will position California and our allies at the forefront of the global hydrogen transformation.”
– Theresa Maldonado, Board Chair, ARCHES and VP of Research and Innovation for the University of California
What Others Are Saying:
The ARCHES initiative was awarded a $12.6 billion contract – the largest in DOE history – just last year. Designed to position the United States as a global leader in clean hydrogen infrastructure, the program promised a clear pathway to energy independence, technological leadership and economic growth. By leveraging domestic resources including agricultural waste, woody biomass and municipal wastewater, ARCHES is advancing innovative solutions for decarbonizing transportation, manufacturing and port operations.
