September Newsletter

Welcome to our ARCHES partner newsletter!

ARCHES believes in fostering meaningful connections and staying engaged with our valued partners up and down the state of California. Our hope is that this series will help keep you up-to-date on recent hydrogen hub happenings and how to continue to engage with the ARCHES ecosystem.

We have had quite the summer! In July, we officially announced the signing of a landmark $12.6 billion agreement, including up to $1.2 billion from the Department of Energy and $11.4 billion in public and private matching funds, to build and expand clean energy infrastructure across the state.

In late-August, we held a half-day celebration for the official launch of California’s hydrogen hub with Governor Gavin Newsom, U.S. Under Secretary of Energy for Infrastructure David Crane, and Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), along with other local, state, and national leaders. The event showcased cutting-edge hydrogen-powered transportation projects in Oakland, demonstrating not only what has already been accomplished in California, but what is coming as part of ARCHES’ renewable hydrogen hub.

This is just the beginning. The historic launch of ARCHES marks a transformative moment for California’s clean energy future. We are delighted to have you join us on our journey as we build out a sustainable hydrogen marketplace and ecosystem.

Here’s to a future filled with innovation, growth, and shared accomplishments.

Warm regards,

ARCHES Work Group

Now that we have signed the Cooperative Agreement, ARCHES is in the process of a) publishing the White Papers from each technical work group, and b) reconstituting the workgroups to help advance the California (and beyond) hydrogen market. If you are a member of a workgroup please give us your input on what would be most valuable to you: ARCHES Working Group Survey. If you are not a member of a workgroup and would like to contribute your technical expertise to ARCHES’ efforts please sign up here.

D.C. Trip: 45V Production Tax Credit (PTC)

Last week, ARCHES and leaders from all seven regional hydrogen hubs teams met with key leaders in Washington D.C. to discuss the impacts of the draft 45V Hydrogen Production Tax Credit. The team met with John Podesta, Senior Advisor to the President for Clean Energy Innovation and Implementation, DOE Secretary Jennifer M. Granholm, the Treasury Department, and federal legislators to discuss the importance of getting the tax credit right.  In short, without adjustments to the framework, about half of the projects in the nationwide hub program would not go forward–resulting in more carbon emissions, fewer jobs, and longer reliance on fossil fuels. 2024 Hydrogen Grand Prix Competition

ARCHES was a proud sponsor of the 2024 H2GP World Final at RE+ in Anaheim. It was incredible to witness young innovators drive change, one hydrogen car at a time.

ARCHES Celebration

On August 30, federal, state, and local leaders joined ARCHES for a half-day event showcasing cutting-edge hydrogen-powered transportation projects in Oakland. The group traveled in the hydrogen-powered Sea Change Ferry, then on AC Transit and SamTrans hydrogen fuel cell electric buses, to the True Zero Hydrogen Fuel Station, which can support 200 class 8 trucks daily.
